Group Description

Centre for Theoretical and Applied Ecology, is a non profit Association, established in 1987. It’s legal personality was recognised in 1995 by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region. C.E.T.A. carries out research, applied experimentation and innovative technology development in different environmental sectors: : sustainable management of environmental and natural resources; promotion and diffusion of renewable energy technologies (biomass, biogas, biofuels, solar energy – photovoltaic); energy efficiency and energy planning; scientific dissemination.
Main activities:
•experimentation and feasibility studies for the production and use of biofuels (i.e. ethanol, biodiesel, pure plant oil, biogas) and biomass residual (i.e. bagasse) or obtained from herbaceous pluriennial crops (i.e. giant reed, miscanthus, switchgrass)
•design of photovoltaic systems
•studies of land resources, including use of remote sensing and GIS for the design of technological systems in the forest-wood working industry, for economic exploitation of production
•experimentation and designing of urban waste-water and manure treatment using innovative biotechnologies (i.e. phytoremediation, reed-bed systems), including their use for irrigation
•studies for the organic waste recovery and recycling (i.e. composting)
•services to public authorities: energy planning for local and regional administrations and estimation of GHGs balance in local contests (e.g. Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia, Provincia di Gorizia, Comunità Montana della Carnia).
In Gorizia C.E.T.A. has a chemical-microbiological laboratory, where the small and pilot scale plants for producing ethanol and biogas support the experimental projects, and the administrative headquarter, and the technical laboratory for plants design. C.E.T.A. staff has different professional specialisation, in order to optimise the multidisciplinary approach in the activity sectors: biologists, agronomists, economists, engineers. C.E.T.A. has an international cooperation experience with European countries (Slovenia, Greece, Spain, Austria, The Netherlands, Hungary, Germany) and Latin American countries (Uruguay, Mexico) on projects regarding renewable energy sources, biofuels, sustainable development, waste water treatment and energy planning.
